Heat Treated vs Fresh Kava Root: What Temperature Actually Does to It By Chester Takau · August 2026 Short answer: heat doesn't destroy kava the way forum lore claims. Kavalactones melt around 248–284°F and boil near 850°F, so even scalding 212°F water leaves roughly 91–99% of them intact — a 10-minute boil costs about 9%, a 5-minute boil about 5%. Warm water in the 104–120°F range actually pulls out more kavalactones than cold, not fewer. What heat does change is the balance between the lighter, faster-acting lactones and the heavier, sedating ones, which is why hot-prepared kava feels different, not weaker. Fresh (green) root is a separate question entirely — it's more concentrated than dried root regardless of water temperature, because drying itself is what strips potency, not the brewing water.
